Did you know that you can make summer learning so fun for your kids that they’ll hardly know they are learning?
I have a list of some enjoyable activities that your children can do that will keep their minds active and learning throughout the summer months. Some of these activities can be done indoors with items you have around the house. Others are best done outside. All will engage your children’s minds in good ways.
Fun Summer Learning Activities
Go on Trips
Visit museums, zoos, parks (local, state, or national), or the beach. Some of these locations like museums and zoos are obviously learning environments. Others may seem like purely recreational places to visit, but remember that, for young children at least, “play” is learning. Building a sand castle is a hands-on learning experience that helps them develop creativity and problem-solving skills. Parks provide opportunities for science exploration. So go ahead and take that beach vacation or camping trip. It will make summer learning fun for the whole family.
Participate in Summer Reading Programs
Kids who participate in summer reading programs can get little rewards for reading, plus the organization hosting the program will sometimes have fun and educational events. Check out your local library and bookstores for these programs.
Let Your Children Do Hobbies
Many hobbies are not only enjoyable, but educational as well. Most require your children to create, organize, and/or problem solve, all good learning activities. Here are some pastimes that your children can do that will get them learning:
- Collecting things like coins or stamps
- Photography
- Sewing
- Woodworking
- Cooking
- Drawing
- Painting
- Crafts
- Wood carving
- Pottery and sculpting
- Origami
- Model building
- Bird watching
- Scrapbooking
- Pet care
- Star gazing
A bonus to doing hobbies is that sometimes they lead your children to finding their talents that could ultimately lead to a future career.
Play Games and Do Puzzles
Educational games and puzzles make learning more fun. Luckily, you can find a wide assortment of printable learning games, puzzles, and even other activities on the web for little or nothing. Want them to last a while? Laminate them and they will endure for years to come.
By the way, you can get a free color-recognition game for young children here.
I hope that you and your children have an enjoyable summer!
